Immunology

The Graduate Program in Immunology was created in 1983 by professors at the Department of Immunology in this institute. Today, our program congregates researchers from other institutions including Instituto Butantan, Universidade Federal de São Paulo, Faculdade de Medicina USP, Faculdade de Ciências Farmacêuticas, USP. We are, in average, 30 supervisors responsible for state-of-art laboratories in all the institutions mentioned above. This structure brings a multidisciplinary dimension to the program, which is reflected in the research areas available to the students. Today, we have research lines encompassing autoimmune diseases to immunodeficiency, cancer to transplant, host-pathogen interactions, mother-fetal tolerance to mention some of them. Besides the variety in research cell lines, our students have access to laboratories abroad through collaborations and cooperation agreements between USP and other universities. It is possible for students to obtain double-degrees with international institutions.

Our students are supported by scholarships from federal and state funding agencies Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel, CAPES, National Council for Scientific and Technological Development, CNPq, and Sao Paulo Research Foundation, FAPESP. Our supervisors are also funded by state and federal agencies, as wells as international institutions.

In the years since its creation, the program trained 668 students, approximately 8% from other countries. The Brazilian students come from all federation states. Our program is rated as excellent, according to the evaluation system established by CAPES. We are among the 23% best programs in Immunology in Brazil. The result of our search for excellency can be observed by our alumni, whom are occupying positions in academic institutions in Brazil and worldwide, and in the health and industry sector in Brazil.
