Resumo: Bactérias e fungos têm uma extraordinária capacidade para sintetizar centenas de moléculas; estas apresentam diversas atividades biológicas com aplicações industriais, na clínica humana e veterinária, agricultura e meio ambiente. O grupo concentra seu interesse principal em moléculas com atividade antitumoral. Para isso, micro-organismos produtores bactérias e fungos são estudados visando conhecer as vias biossintéticas para produção destas moléculas, os genes envolvidos na biossíntese, técnicas de produção e identificação das moléculas, tendo como objetivo central o desenvolvimento de uma molécula que seja candidata a aplicações clínicas. Outras atividades biológicas de interesse são antibióticos, imunoreguladores, reguladores de colesterol, biomoléculas e enzimas com aplicações industriais como o bioetanol.
Abstract: Bacteria and fungi have a remarkable ability to synthesize hundreds of molecules; they present several biological activities with applications in industries, in human and veterinary clinics, agriculture and environment. The group focuses its main interest in molecules with antitumoral activity. For this purpose, producer microorganisms bacteria and fungi are studied, aiming to understand the biosynthetic pathways for the production of these molecules, genes involved in the biosynthesis, production techniques and identification of the molecules, with the main objective of developing a candidate molecule for clinical applications. Other biological activities of interest are antibiotics, immunoregulators, cholesterol regulators, biomolecules and enzymes with industrial applications such as bioethanol production.
