Resumo: O objetivo geral dessa linha de pesquisa é elucidar os mecanismos moleculares envolvidos na indução da morte e disfunção de células beta pancreáticas durante o desenvolvimento do diabetes do tipo 1, devido à exposição dessas células a citocinas pró-inflamatórias durante o assalto do sistema imune. O objetivo é usar esse conhecimento no desenvolvimento de estratégias que permitam a prevenção da destruição das células beta durante a insulite e também após o transplante de ilhotas de Langherhans em modelos clínicos da doença e posteriormente em pacientes.
Abstract: The group is interested in investigating the molecular mechanisms involved in the induction of pancreatic beta cell dysfunction and death during the development of type I diabetes, due to its exposure to pro-inflammatory cytokines during the immune assault. The objective is to use this information in the development of new therapeutic strategies to prevent beta cell destruction during insulites and after Langherhans islet transplantation in clinical models of the disease and later in patients.
