The concept of Biosafety was created in the 20th century with the intent of establishing technical standards and regulations for the handling, trading, consumption, storage, licensing and discarding of Genetically Modified Organisms – GMO – allowing the sustained development of modern Biotechnology, while protecting human and animal health and the envoronment.
GMOs are any biological entity (viruses, bacteria, fungi, protozoa, cell lines, animals, plants, etc.) whose genetic material have been altered by techniques of recombinant DNA/genetic engineering.
The Internal Biosafety Committe – CIBio – is in charge of obtaining the licenses from the Biosafety Commission for any activities related to GMOs, as well as monitoring those activities in the Institute. ICB’s Biosafety Quality Certificate number – CQB 0046/98 – should be presented as requested by all ICB researchers whose projects are certified by this CIBio.
CIBio does not take part in any technical, administrative or educational initiatives about diminishing the risks and preventing accidents with wild pathogens.
Every laboratory in ICB must be registered with CIBio. The labs that do not use GMOs or genetically modified animals must still make their registration and declare the absence of any activities involving those organisms and their derivatives.
