Resumo: A percepção de sinais ambientais é crucial para a célula modificar seu padrão de expressão gênica para enfrentar mudanças no ambiente. Os sistemas regulatórios garantem que a resposta seja finamente regulada, por mecanismos transcricionais e pós-transcricionais. O principal objetivo da pesquisa é identificar os sinais ambientais, os sistemas de transdução de sinais e os mecanismos regulatórios importantes para a resposta a estresses na bactéria oligotrófica Caulobacter crescentus. Esta bactéria de vida livre está adaptada a viver em ambientes com baixíssimo teor nutricional, e possui um ciclo de desenvolvimento com um passo de diferenciação celular, não usual em bactérias.
Abstract: The sensing of environmental signals is crucial for the cell to reset its gene expression to face the changes in the environment. The regulatory systems ensure that the response is finely tuned, by both transcriptional and post-transcriptional mechanisms. The main goal of this project is to identify the environmental signals, signal transduction systems and regulatory mechanisms important for stress response in the oligotrophic bacterium Caulobacter crescentus. This free-living bacterium is well adapted to very low nutrient environments, and possesses a developmental cycle that includes a unique step of cell differentiation that is unusual in bacteria.
